This audio e-Book is about agriculture in Britain. It is taken from the audio cassette recordings of an undergraduate student's lectures in mid 1980. This student was successful in obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree in geography. Part of his modular studies was based on the geography of the British Isles. The lectures were given by Chris Patten at the polytechnic of East London (now know as the Metropolitan University). Here is a brief introduction of what was involved in this part of the student's degree course: COURSE TITLE AND CODE: REGINAL STUDIES: BRITISH ISLES GG 406; Status: Advanced; Weighting: Module.; Department/Subject Area: Geography.; Semester: 3rd or 5th; Pre-requisites: Introductory Geography IN 206.; Cognate Course: Regional Studies: Africa GG 407, Regional Studies: Monsoon Asia GG 307, Regional Studies: Europe GG 306, Geography of Town Planning, Historical Geomorphology of the British Isles GG 501, Historical Geography of the British Isles GG 304, Biogeography of the British Isles GG 401. AIMS: The aims to deepen the student's appreciation of spatial variations in the economic and social structure of the British Isles through an emphasis on the resource base of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. OBJECTIVES: On completion of the course students should have developed their critical abilities in the sphere of regional analysis. In particular, they should be able to discuss possible causes of present economic and social patterns and the implications of attempts made at national and local level to plan for change. SYLLABUS: The course will focus partly on systematic studies of particular aspects of resource utilization (such as agriculture and power production) and partly and particular regional analyses. Normally, nine weeks will be devoted to thematic topics and the remainder of the session to the regional case studies, which will place particular emphasis on planning resources utilization and integration in both urban and rural areas. The systematic section of the course includes consideration of the following; (a)Agriculture, (B) Forestry,(C) Water resources, (D) Fisheries, (E) Energy, (F) Transport, (G) Manufacturing and service industry, (H) Social and demographic characteristics of the population, (I) Territorial bases of government. Topics and regions may, however, be varied in order to deal with particular issues important nationally or locally at the time PRACTICAL WORK: The emphasis of practical work varies throughout the course. Students will, however, be introduced to documentary, statistical and cartographical sources of information and will use data from these sources as a basis for the discussion of regional differentiation and the causes and nature of social and economic change.
